About The Blog

aboutblog_gbmeasuresfish

Fly fishing is a wonderful sport with a host of lessons that continue for a lifetime. These lessons are far-ranging, and as deep as the angler cares to wade. That’s a part of the charm of the sport. This site is dedicated to exposing the fly fisher to the entirety of the sport and all the excitement, fun, and adventure that every facet offers. And to that end, I have elected to include lessons and anecdotes on all aspects of fly fishing on this site.

But there’s so much more to fly fishing than just learning how to catch more fish. Sure that’s significant in the overall picture, but there’s also another whole world of gear, fly tying materials and design tactics, the study of all aspects of the life of the fish and its food organisms, the ecology of rivers, lakes, and oceans, collecting books and videos, travel adventures, friendships, sports shows, schools, and so much more, and so I have included articles on these topics as well. Christian fly fishers can find Gospel insights on my Jacob’s Well blog.

You suggested a bead as an alternative to antron or wool to simulate the silver bubbles emitted by many emergers.
I can`t see how this would improve a sprakling emerger pattern, for instance.
A;lso, the weight of a bead, has to be a factor in a fly that is trying to get to the surface….

  5. Gary Borger says:

Glass beads, small ones obviously, are used on midge emergers and pupa, often in clear or pearlesccent color to give a bit of glow to the head of the fly. Rick Takahashi and Jerry Hubka show some great examples in their new book “Modern Midges.”

    Hi Gary,

I caught 2 of your most enjoyable and informative (not to mention entertaining) seminars at the Pleasanton show and picked up autographed copy of “Fishing the Film” that I’ve now read cover to cover 3 times, so thanks and please hurry with the rest of the series. I don’t tie, so have been looking high & low for a place to buy your Beaded Butt Damsel, but am striking out, so am hoping you can point me to a retail source. Thanks…………Rick Davis

  7. Gary Borger says:

Unfortunately no one is tying it commercially at the moment. If you have friends that tie, they can make it–it’s an easy fly to tie. Best, GB

    Dear Gary,

I’m still chuckling when thinking back to your nymphing presentation at the NJ fly fishing show last January. Thanks. It was as informative as it was amusing.

I’ve finally accessed your website in the past couple of days and am benefiting greatly. I have a couple of questions on leaders and knots. Would it be best to ask them at the location of the relevant categories on your site that inspired them?

    Regards,

    Bobby Mac

  9. Gary Borger says:

Thanks Bobby. Sure, ask them in the categories and that way they’ll get posted in the best place. Best, GB
